Ukrainian Whisky Connoisseurs Club - January 2016 tasting

An evening dedicated to former Ukrainian Whisky Club President Alexey Savchenko the I, who has gone a few years ago, so today we will taste his favourite distilleries, slainte to Him!

Glengoyne Teapot Dram batch 4 58.7% - a very decent dram: powerful sherry character (nuts, fruits, spices, demerara sugar) and long finish. Despite its strength it's an easy drinking malt. Score = 86/100!

Edradour 12 yo Sauternes Finish 55.4% - one of the best Edradours I've tried: sweet dessert whisky developing on dried apricots and citrus fruits. Score = 86/100!

Strathisla 21 yo 1992/2013 Director's Cut 57.6% - eminent distillery, a kind of expensive series - Director's Cut - though the result is not that good: alcoholic, sharp, lots of wood. Score = 80/100.

Linkwood 22 yo 1991 Raw Cask Blackadder 58.1% - hm-m-m... acetone, varnish and nail liquid in the nose, the taste is slightly better, you can get Linkwood oiliness, though overall (and of course in my personal opinion) it's a fail. Unless you love acetone, then it should be great. I'd say the cask was unsuccessful. Though you should know I'm not a big fan of Linkwood :) Score = 19 21 21 21, 82/100.

Mortlach 21 yo 1994/2015 Murray McDavid Mission Gold 50.4% - matured in bourbon cask, finished in first fill bourbon cask. Quite an interesting idea. Maybe it is lack of sherry, maybe it is influence of this very cask, though I wouldn't have guessed Mortlach in blind tasting. No sulphur and no granite. Quite pleasant rounded whisky with vegetable notes in the nose. Score = 83/100.

Bunnahabhain 24 yo 1987 Wilson & Morgan 45.2% - Bunna being old enough + sherry butt = guaranteed success. Sherry fruitiness goes together with quite high peatiness for a sailor whisky, finish is on salt and see. Kind of Lagavulin DE dressed in skirt. Warning: extremely drinkable! Score = 88/100!

Highland Park 29 yo 1985/2014 Mackillop's Choice 51.6% - two complications at once: you wont' meet HP from bottler so often and even more rare is HP matured solely in bourbon cask. Perhaps the best whisky of the evening (though I'm HP driven, don't take this too seriously). Elegant, exquisite and sophisticated. Heather, grass, barley, green fruits, some hint on sea. Score = 89/100!
