Port Ellen from bottlers is always different. Tonight we have the one from Douglas Laing.
Port Ellen DL Platinum 29 yo 1979/2009 53.2% - when did you see Port Ellen in duty free last time?.. This one was bottled for travel retail back in 2009.
Nose: wet wool. Perhaps wet sweater after sea bathing?.. Some salt, lemon, kippers and smoke. Not so powerful and convincing as official releases. But perhaps I have bottle not in perfect condition: the cork was broken when opening.
Taste: quite a burst of pepper, salt, lemon, wood and smoke.
Finish: long enough on bitter lemons and peat.
Overall: well, I can't say it's bad, though you usually expect a bit more from cask strength Port Ellen. It's well balanced, but official releases are more powerful and complex in every component.
Score: 21.5 22 22 22, 87.5/100!
