What about drinking some Islay in summer?.. Off-the-cuff tasting with Sergii took place this week.
Glendronach 15 yo Revival 46% - taken as a warm-up malt. Very well-known one so I will be short: sherry, prunes, touches of mushroms, very delicate. Sergii score = 86/100, my score = 88/100.
Lagavulin 1997/2013 DE 43% - both salty and sherried Lag. Perfect balance of initial wild character and sherry finish. Sergii score = 88/100, my score = 88/100.
Laphroaig PX Cask 48% - I'd say a bit inferior to the previous 2 samples. There is some sea, salt, touches of sherry, though would be great to have more expression. Sergii score = 87/100, my score 85/100.
Lagavulin 12 yo bottled 2014 54.4% - much more complex than 16 yo DE. Needs some time either in bottle or in glass, unpleasant mash notes go aways and it gets just perfect. Sergii score = 89/100, my score = 90/100.
Caol Ila 25 yo 1978/2004 59.4% - smoked apples in the nose, ocean of salt on a palate. It's brighter than Lag, though less complex. Anyway it's brilliant and much better than regular version with 43% strenth. Changes after some time. Sergii score = 90/100, my score = 90/100.
Linkwood 31 yo 1981/2013 Cadenhead Chairman Stock 44.8% - typical notes of varnish, though a good one, if we can say so. It's complex, complicated and connoisseurs whisky. One of the best Linkwoods I've had so far. Should be kept in the glass for a while. Sergii score = 91/100, my score = 91/100.
Conclusions: 3 malts of 90+ is a luck at any tasting! Revival, Lag DE and Caol 25 yo were brought as samples, so I took the photos either from the iphone or from the web.
