This time we're gonna taste selection of presumably Glenfarclas aged in fino casks (that's what rumours say) and compare them with official 40 yo release.
The whole selection:
Glenfarclas 40 yo 46% - according to the bottle code this should be 3-rd release.
Nose: very rich, starts on honey and apples and after half an hour transforms into herbs and pharmacy.
Taste: nice balance of sherry notes and wood spices, but it doesn't blow you off.
Finish: long, spicy, prunes and raisins of course, herbal liqueur, hints of coffee and chocolate.
Overall: drank it quite quick, maybe after an hour it would have shown all of its potency. Nevertheless I liked 2010 release better, it was more powerful in taste and finish, scored it 93/100.
Score = 23 22 22 23, 90/100!
Speyside Region 1973/2017 Liquid Treasures cask #9 46.5% - 120 bottles produced, most obviously the cask was shared with this very Speyside 1973 Archives .
Nose: wow, basket of yellow tropical fruits (you can name whatever you recall), green bananas, honey pollen, just great and uber-tasty.
Taste: oily and creamy, wax, honey, oranges and minerals.
Finish: again on most honeyed oranges on earth, just sublime.
Overall: utterly complex and drinkable at this strength, might go even for 95/100, but will stay with conservative mark. My winner of the tasting.
Score = 24 23 23 24, 94/100!
Speyside Region 1973/2017 Whisky Doris cask #12 52.2% - 221 bottles produced.
Nose: not so active as in previous samples, but if you warm it - opens in a similar honey-tropical style.
Taste: also similar to Liquid Treasures, but even more powerful due to the strength.
Finish: here we've got small problem, the taste stops and falls into wood with a hint of metal.
Overall: the start was good, but finish is completely different and too woody for me.
Score = 23 24 22 22, 91/100!
Speyside Region 1973/2017 Archives 49.4% - 348 bottles produced.
Nose: usual exotic fruits salad + touches of nuts.
Taste: creamy, oily, touches of coconut and wood but not that much.
Finish: pepper, oak, nutmeg and lots of fruits.
Overall: very stable in all the components, a bit more on nuts and cream I'd say. Oak is present but it doesn't dominate as in the previous sample.
Score = 23 23 23 23, 92/100!
Speyside Region 1973/2017 Whisky Fassle 51.3% - the label doesn't say q-ty of bottles released.
Nose: dried fruits, wax, pears, soaked apples (at last!).
Taste: sweet and complex, tad spicy and peppery,
Finish: long, sweet, gets drier and delivers notes of bitter chocolate.
Overall: very good in all the components.
Score = 23 23 23 23, 92/100!
