Trio of new HP samples arrived, let it be idea of tonight's mini-tasting.
Highland Park 2006/2017 cask #3720 bottled for Munich Airport 64.5% - 1-st fill European hogshead, 324 bottles released.
Nose: intensive sherry, alcohol is obvious, lots of red fruits (cherries and strawberries), hints of sulphur. With water it becomes calm.
Taste: too hot, water is a must. After some spoons of water oranges and salt emerge.
Finish: softest smoke, sweet start transforms into salt and pepper at the very end. Enjoyable.
Overall: provided you give it water and time it is quite good.
Score = 21 22 22 22, 87/100!
Highland Park 15 yo SMWS 4.324 Sundowner dram 59.7% - refill ex-sherry butt, 572 bottles released.
Nose: quite reserved and dry, with water you get grass, tobacco, spices, green and yellow fruits, the style itself resembles bourbon cask maturation, not sherry.
Taste: burning, with water becomes peppery and spicy (particularly cloves and cardamom).
Finish: dry, oaky, some smoke, cloves and pepper, hints of classical orange and heather, salt on the lips.
Overall: dry and spicy HP, which might not meet your expectations, though the finish is very good.
Score = 21 21 22 21, 85/100!
Highland Park 15 yo SMWS 4.238 Surrender your soul 59.7% - refill ex-oloroso butt, 474 bottles released.
Nose: similar profile to previous sample, but you get more sweetness, smoke and chocolate.
Taste: powerful and sweet, citrus and salty, even hints of official Port Ellens (for me they are oysters and olive oil).
Finish: long, sweet, lemony and salty, soft smoke as a last point.
Overall: great HP, my favourite tonight.
Score = 22 22.5 22.5 22, 89/100!
